When an Appointment Could Have Been a Phone Call + the slowing of time
Thursday 22 August 2024
In today’s fast-paced world, time is an asset. Yet, many of us still find ourselves trapped in a cycle of unnecessary meetings and appointments.
A couple of days ago, I returned to see my cardiologist for the second time, a follow-up to my first visit, which I documented in a blog post HERE.
That initial consultation left me feeling frustrated and anxious; the doctor had refused to give me clearance for surgery, insisting instead on yet another test and deciding FOR me, that I had to return to see him again. I had already undergone several assessments—an echo, and an EKG—and the idea of being subjected to yet another test felt like an unnecessary hurdle in an already stressful pre-surgery process. He now wanted a 24-hour Holter monitor before he would decide to clear me. This week, once again, I found myself undergoing an EKG before seeing the specialist, a prerequisite for any appointment with this particular doctor. I understand the importance of monitoring my heart health, but as someone who is immunocompromised, the waiting room—a space filled with unmasked individuals sneezing and coughing—makes each visit fraught with anxiety about potential infections. It's disheartening to recall that my last visit to this doctor resulted in me getting sick, a risk I cannot afford as I inch closer to my surgery date.
On Tuesday, I walked into the appointment hopeful that I would finally receive the clearance I needed along with clear instructions regarding my medications in the leadup to surgery. I had done what he wanted me to do. I had been multiple times to do all of his tests and now see him a second time.
Surely he would give me the information, clear me and I could move on?
Instead, I was met with the doctor’s assurance that he had already communicated everything necessary to my surgical team, he had already ‘given them my instructions’. When I inquired about specifics, including the transition from blood-thinning tablets to injections, I met with vague answers and an air of dismissal. The cardiologist opted not to clarify—choosing instead to cut our consultation short with the promise of seeing me again in six months, after doing the same tests again. I made FIVE appointments/visits to his office (to see him-twice) and for multiple tests) only to be told “I have already given instructions” and to be told to come back in six months.
The brevity of this visit left me feeling even more frustrated and left me seething a little. It’s vital for patients to be informed participants in their treatment, yet I was left without the clear guidance I had sought. These visits often feel like simple check-offs on a list rather than genuine opportunities for patient care and communication. With the numerous hurdles I've faced along this journey, it begs the question: why not communicate this information via a phone call instead of insisting I risk another potential infection by physically attending the appointment?
It feels like a missed opportunity for genuine care and consideration for a patient’s well-being. I understand that the doctor has given my surgical team ‘instructions’ but why not give them to me also? Give the patient the same instructions? I was sitting in front of him and it would have made it feel like the consultation was worth it and would have eased a little of my anxiety.
If you can articulate the purpose of a conversation in a few sentences, it’s likely that a phone call would suffice and I really do wonder.. are the doctors not short on time? Would it not be easier on them to pick up the phone, rather than have someone do all of these things, and come to a consultation multiple times, only to be told nothing? Surely there is a better way to do this?
As we continue to navigate the complexities of modern world, it’s essential to streamline our communication processes. By recognizing when an appointment could have been a simple phone call, we can save time, reduce stress, and foster care and protection for the vulnerable.
In the end, effective communication comes down to understanding the needs of each situation. By prioritizing clarity and efficiency, we can begin to transform our approach to appointments for the better. I really wish that I had not been made to waste my time and that of my friend who had to drive me to all of these tests and visits. Only for me to be NOT told much and to not actually be told I had the clearance he said I needed. Apparently the team knows what he thinks, but I haven't been told. Despite so many visits.
So, what else has been happening since my last blog post? Well, it’s been quite a whirlwind of medical appointments, all set up by various doctors to ensure I’m as prepared as possible for surgery.
To say it has been overwhelming would be an understatement.
The sheer number of consultations and tests made me feel a bit like a pinball, bouncing from one appointment to the next, but now I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have just one phone call with the endocrinologist and one final appointment with my GP left before it’s go time for the surgery. It’s hard to believe that after all this preparation, the actual procedure is just around the corner!
One particularly interesting appointment this month involved checking my vocal cords.
I learned something fascinating: when surgeons operate on or near the thyroid, they work extremely close to the vocal cords. I initially thought the purpose of the check was to location my vocal cords so they could avoid any damage during surgery, but I was informed that they actually perform this check to establish a baseline. The technician explained that a common side effect of a thyroidectomy is potential nerve damage, which can affect the vocal cords. By obtaining a "before" image, they can compare it to the "after" results and attempt to help me if I experience any vocal issues post-surgery.
So, how exactly do they check your vocal cords, you ask?
For those of you who might not be familiar, the process involves a long, thin tube equipped with a camera and light. To prepare, the technician numbs your nose with a spray in both nostrils, which is a peculiar sensation in itself. After a couple of minutes, they carefully insert the tube into your nostril and down your throat until they can get a clear view of your vocal cords. Although it isn’t painful, the whole experience can be quite uncomfortable—definitely not the most enjoyable of feelings! But one silver lining is that I actually got to see my vocal cords! Who would’ve thought that amidst all the medical chaos, I’d get a sneak peek at this fascinating part of my anatomy?
So there you go, just another chapter in this journey!
That is just a couple of my recent appointments, and I am so glad that everything is settling down now.
In fact, time seems to be moving slowly. I am just under two weeks pre-op, and it has gone from full-on with no time to rest, to a strange sensation of time almost standing still, with the hour hand moving at a glacial pace.
It’s a curious contrast, and while I initially found the abrupt change unsettling, I’ve started to embrace this quieter spell in the lead up to whatever is coming.
Harnessing the tranquility, I’ve slowly begun to pack a bag, ticking off items on my checklist with a sense of purpose. With some free time on my hands, I’ve also tackled a few online jobs that needed my attention, balancing productivity with moments of relaxation.
Excitingly, November will mark a year since I obtained my Australian citizenship, which still feels surreal. Being a New Zealand citizen by birth adds a unique layer to my identity, and I truly cherish it. On the day of my citizenship ceremony, my friends gifted me an old PS4 along with a copy of Hogwarts Legacy, a thoughtful gesture that has brought joy to my downtime. The game is a delightful mix of thrill and challenge, capturing my imagination and leaving me shouting in exasperation one moment, then fully immersed in its enchanting world the next. That game really is something else.
My question... WHAT IS WITH Ranrok's dragon??
To add to the respite from everything medical, my best friend and I have embarked on a couple of day trips this week. These little adventures have been a wonderful distraction, reminding me of the beauty in simple moments spent together. Whether we’re exploring nearby sights or just enjoying each other’s company, I appreciate these experiences more than ever during this pause in time and rushing.
On one jaunt this week, we stumbled upon a bakery just a few hours’ drive from Melbourne, and it was nothing short of magical! As we stepped through the door, the sweet, buttery aroma enveloped us, beckoning us to explore the delightful array of treats on display. The cakes, oh my gosh! Each one was a work of art, beautifully crafted with vibrant colours and intricate designs that made it almost too good to eat. From multiple flavours of Vanilla Slice (Strawberry, Passionfruit and Pistachio, oh my!) to light and airy lemon tarts, every bite was wonderful.
We couldn't resist sampling a few of their signature goodies, including melt-in-your-mouth apple tarts and decadent Hedgehog, Cinnamon rolls and more. Every morsel was an experience unto itself, crafted with passion and precision by the talented bakers.
If you ever find yourself in Melbourne, make it a priority to visit this bakery — it’s a sweet escape that you won’t want to miss. The drive may be a few hours, but trust me, the delicious desserts are worth every minute on the road! Ps- They have Coffee, Beverages, Pies, Sausage Rolls, Bread and more as well.

During a recent day trip to Geelong, we stumbled upon a hidden gem that completely transformed our culinary experience. Tucked away in a quaint corner of the city, this charming little eatery serves what I can confidently declare to be the best Bánh mì I have ever tasted.
The moment I took my first bite, I was hit with a perfect medley of flavors—the crispiness of the baguette contrasted beautifully with the tender, marinated meat, complemented by fresh herbs and pickled vegetables that added a delightful crunch and a fab salad and sauces. Each ingredient seemed carefully curated. In the rush of excitement, I completely forgot to snap a photo and as we savored every last bite, it became clear that this little find was not just a meal, but an unforgettable experience that left us eager to return to Geelong and indulge in that delicious Bánh mì again yesterday. This bakery has lines out the door at lunchtime and because the turnover is so high, all of the ingredients are so fresh. It really is wonderful!

On our way back from lunch yesterday, we decided to explore The Mill Markets in Geelong, a treasure trove of vintage finds and unique antiques. The moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by the delightful sight of intricately designed furniture, retro collectibles, and an eclectic mix of trinkets that transported us to another era. The atmosphere buzzed with nostalgia, and I couldn’t help but feel excited as I wandered through the aisles, contemplating the stories each piece had to tell. For any pop culture enthusiast, the market is a paradise; it boasts an impressive array of stalls filled with memorabilia from beloved franchises like Marvel, Harry Potter, and Disney. As a proud Harry Potter nerd, I couldn’t resist picking up a gorgeous Ravenclaw purse that now holds a special place in my handbag!
Amidst the vibrant stalls, we discovered a charming little coffee shop tucked away in the corner. The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the air, and I knew we had to give it a try. The cakes are great, the people so friendly and the coffee… awesome! The Mill Markets as a must-visit spot in Geelong. If you ever find yourself on the Bellarine Highway in Newcomb, make sure to stop by and indulge in the vintage charm and delightful finds. You won’t leave empty-handed!
As the days inch closer to my surgery, the weight of anticipation feels both heavy and hopeful. With just a handful of days until my admission, I find myself caught in a whirlwind of emotions—anxiety, hope, and just plain dread. The clock ticks slowly, each passing moment a reminder of the challenge ahead. I know recovery will test my patience and resilience, but I also understand that this journey is critical for my long-term health.
The uncertainty may be daunting, but it’s reassuring to think about the skilled doctors and surgeons who will be there, guiding me through each step of the process. Although it can be a struggle when the PTSD is raging, I try to remind myself that I am not just facing an operation; I am embarking on a path toward healing and renewal. The countdown isn’t just about the surgery but signifies a new beginning, a chance to reclaim my well-being and embrace life with renewed vigor. T minus 12 days!
